Young Lawyers to Hold a Veterans Legal Assistance Event in Virginia Beach
On April 14th, young lawyers from and area will volunteer to help veterans and their families understand available federal disability compensation and pension benefits and complete the required forms. Breakfast and lunch will be served.
This clinic is being organizated by local volunteer lawyers through a year-long ABA YLD initiative called Project Salute: Young Lawyers Serving Veterans. The concept was developed by the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and adopted by the ABA YLD as its 2011-12 national public service project.
The free legal clinic, from 9 AM to 5 PM. at the Old Dominion University Higher Education Center, is unique compared to prior Project Salute clinics. Both Old Dominion and Tidewater Community College, located near the clinic's location, have a high concentration of student service members. The clinic aims to assist not only older veterans, but also student veterans.
Young lawyer Sarah Schauerte has worked closely with the Student Veteran Association of Old Dominion University. "Because of the heavy military population in Virginia Beach, combined with the clinic operating as an all-day event, the aim is to set the record in the number of veterans assisted," she said.
Kathleen Levingston, faculty advisor to the Student Veteran Association of Old Dominion, stated: "The Old Dominion University Student Veterans Association is proud to sponsor this event. We have over 1800 veterans at our institution, and we are devoted to making sure that their transition from service to civilian life is a successful one. We are excited to support not only our student veterans but also the veterans in our Hampton Roads community who could benefit from this unique clinic."
If you are a VA-accredited attorney interested in participating in or providing support to the clinic or have questions please contact Sarah Schauerte at firstname.lastname@example.org or 618-719-6140.
