About The Scholarship Fund:

  • The Tort Trial and Insurance Practice (TIPS) Section Scholarship Fund has been established to increase participation in TIPS activities among minorities, solo and small firm practitioners, women, plaintiffs, government lawyers and young lawyers who need financial assistance to participate.

  • Recipients are selected by the TIPS Scholarship Fund Board, which is comprised of three Council appointed members. All information submitted to the Board by applicants is considered confidential and is therefore not released to other groups or individuals.

  • International Risk Management Institute, Inc. (IRMI®) and the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section established this scholarship fund through royalties from subscriptions to IRMI CGL Reporter. The Editorial Board of the CGL Reporter is comprised of eight members of the TIPS Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee.

How Can The Fund Help Me?

The scholarship fund helps members in variety of situations. For example, for a young lawyer who wants to attend a TIPS sponsored CLE program - the topics are right up her alley, the speakers are experts in her field, the opportunity to learn a lot as well network to advance in her field is there - but the registration fee is too high for her and/or the cost of lodging and airfare is prohibitive . . . this fund is for her! For a solo attorney who would like to be active in the ABA and TIPS in particular, perhaps participate in the governance of its committees, help shape legislation, or plan or speak at one of the CLE programs, but he needs assistance to do so . . . this fund can help him!

Potential recipients of scholarship funds must be TIPS members and must fall into one or more of the following categories: minorities, women, solo and small firm practitioners, plaintiffs, government lawyers and young lawyers. The more categories you fall into, the better your chances for receiving an award.

Purpose

TIPS Scholarship Fund was established to broaden the involvement of TIPS members who do not have the financial ability to participate in Section activities.  It is the goal of this fund to increase diversity, with a focus on minorities, women, solo and small firm practitioners, young attorneys, government employees, and public interest attorneys.  This does not, however, exclude attorneys in other categories.

Limitations

Scholarship funds are limited.  TIPS regrets that not every applicant's request can be honored.

What Do I Need To Do?

Fill out an application! A scholarship application has been developed which enables the Board to review the criteria of each applicant, assess the financial need, and determine if a scholarship is warranted. The names of applicants are never distributed beyond the receiving office at TIPS Headquarters, not even to the Scholarship Fund Board. This ensures the confidentiality of the applicant.

  • Applicants must be members of the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section to be eligible to receive an award.

  • Applications must be received a minimum of 30 days prior to the event requiring funding to be considered.

  • An on-line scholarship application is available for your convenience, but if you prefer to receive a hard copy, please contact Linda Wiley (312) 988-5673 in the TIPS office to request a copy.  If you need to join the Section to qualify, simply fill out our on-line membership application.

We look forward to hearing from you!
