Is it safe to give a credit card number online?

Opinions differ about the safety of transmitting your credit-card information over the wires. Though some services claim to use truly secure lines, some experts are skeptical that information like this can be kept secret from truly sophisticated hackers, or computer experts-cum-pests.

Some experts say that once your computer is hooked up to a modem and a phone line, all the data on your computer are fair game for anyone who knows where to find you. If you use a high speed line that does not require dialing in, you are very vulnerable to hacking. Consumer-priced "firewalls" can help.
