Debating Voting Issues, Representativeness, and Reforms
Take Action! - How Should U.S. Elections Be Managed?
1. Research the pros and cons of the Electoral College at Web sites such as www.turnerlearning.com/cnn/election/16_backgrounder.html and www.wikman.com/eric/electoralcollege.html. Debate the issue and vote as a class whether to keep the institution, modify it, or eliminate it. Write a letter to the editor and to your senator or representative stating your view.
2. Find out what voting technology your local precinct uses and whether it is considering changing to another voting method. Using www.fec.gov/pages/faqvdayeprocedures.htm, research the voting rules and procedures used in your states.
3. Find out more about what states are doing to increase voter turnout by visiting www.nass.org/Issues/issues_NMmodelpracts.html. Which of these programs do you think will increase participation? Write a list of recommendations about what you feel should be done and send it to the Secretary of State where you live.
