Hon. Stephanie A. Finley, U.S. Attorney, will speak at 2014 Law Event
U. S. Attorney, Stephanie Finley, will be the speaker for the Shreveport Bar Association Law Day Luncheon that will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014. The national theme for Law Day 2014 is American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters. The right to vote is the very foundation of government by the people. For this reason, striving to establish and protect every citizen’s right to vote has been a central theme of American legal and civic history. Much of the struggle on voting rights began decades ago, but the work is far from complete, and a citizen’s right to cast a ballot remains at risk today.
As we approach the 50th anniversaries of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the 2014 Law Day theme, American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters, calls on every America to reflect on the importance of a citizen’s right to vote and the challenge we still face in ensuring that all Americans have the opportunity to participate in our democracy.
Stephanie Finley is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Grambling State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and was selected as one of the nation's Distinguished Graduates of the Reserve Officer Training Corps. She is a cum laude graduate of Southern University Law Center where she served as the Editor in Chief of the law review, earning her Juris Doctorate in 1991.
Ms. Finley is the first woman appointed to be U.S. Attorney in the State of Louisiana, the top federal law enforcement official, currently serving in the Western District of Louisiana. Prior to her appointment, she served as the Senior Litigation Counsel and the Acting Deputy Chief in the Lafayette office and as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Divisions of the Shreveport and Lafayette offices of the Western District.
Before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office, Ms. Finley was on active duty with the United States Air Force. She is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserves where she is an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate, assigned to the 8th Air Force.
The Law Day Luncheon is put on annually by the Shreveport Bar Association as part of a week of activities celebrating the American tradition of respect for the rule of law. The Shreveport Bar Association also sponsors a student event, with Juniors and Seniors from area high schools participating in a full day of interactive exposure to the legal profession, as well as a community event and a day of fun for lawyers and their families. This year’s community event will be a voter registration drive, in accord with the Law Day theme.
