How has theatre been used as a starting point for grounding meaningful community conversations? How can the arts be used as a foundation for public dialogue?
Our speakers share their experience of being involved in community programming that has utilized the arts to foster conversations on contemporary and controversial issues. They share lessons learned and best practices to consider when facilitating a public dialogue through the arts.
This program is part of Civility and Free Expression in a Constitutional Democracy—A National Dialogue, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and is conducted in partnership with the American Bar Association Division for Public Education. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Bar Association, or any of its program partners.
Mike Wiley & Christie Norris will share about their involvement in developing Talking Race in the Shadows of Controversy at the Chapel Hill Public Library. Community members viewed a performance of Dar He: The Story of Emmett Till, followed by a discussion about race and civility in America. Using the performance as a foundational text, participants explored the discriminatory past of the Jim Crow era and its impact on people today. Are diversity and civility inherently at odds with one another? What steps can a diverse society take to promote cross-racial and cross-cultural civility?
Hallie Gordon will share about her involvement with the Chicago initiative, Now is The Time. More than 15 of Chicago’s theater companies came together to planning this citywide initiative to address youth violence. Experts, community members, youth and non-violence organizations were brought onboard to consult and advise the initiative. The goal was to collectively address this issue and therefore bring increased attention to the problem.
