Applications for the summer 2012 Judicial Intern Opportunity Program will be accepted from second-year law students beginning November 1st, and December 1st for first-year students, in accordance with NALP guidelines. The deadline for applying is January 6, 2012.
The Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is a full-time, six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year minority and/or economically disadvantaged law students who want to do legal research and writing for state or federal judges in participating cities. Participating judges are from Illinois; Texas; Miami, FL; Phoenix, AZ; Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA: Seattle, Washington; Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA. Students selected to the program will receive an award of $1,500.
The mission of the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is to provide opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession. The program also provides opportunities to students with disabilities, students who are economically disadvantaged and students who identify themselves as LGBT. The program is only open to students who have not previously participated as an intern in the program. Students applying to the program must submit a completed application, grades (second-year students), resume, legal writing sample and a statement of interest. Students may rank location preferences on their application; however students may not request particular judges or courts.
Screening interviews will be conducted to better determine student qualifications. Only qualified students will be sent on for judicial interviews. Judicial interviews will continue until all positions are filled.
Application Information
We will NOT be accepting applications prior to Nov. 1 for second-year law students. If you apply prior to that date, your application will not be processed and will need to be resubmitted. If you are a first-year student, you may not apply until Dec. 1.
Students do not need to be an ABA member to apply, however you must have an ABA issued customer service number. The link to apply will take you to the ABA member log-in page. If you are a member, please use your number and password to apply. If you do not remember your number, please contact ABA customer care at 800/ 285-2221. If you do not have a number, please apply for a customer service number (you will not be charged for a membership). In many cases, it will take up to 24 hours for this number to be issued.
Once you have a number and password, you may apply to the program. In order to update or make changes to your application, you will need this number and password for access. Please keep them in a safe place for reference later. If you are selected and accept a position in the program, you will need to become a member of the ABA at that time.
