Member Teaches Workshops in Middle East

In the Middle East and North Africa, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ROLI) administers regional and bilateral programs focusing on judicial development, women and the law, legal education, and the legal profession.

ABA ROLI programs in the Middle East and North Africa have included regional programs for members of the legal community in Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

Recently, the LPM Chair, Joan Bullock, traveled to the Middle East on behalf of LPM and presented a series of workshops concerning the operation and management of legal practices.

These workshops were given as part of an ongoing program of training on the four core areas of practice management--marketing, management, technology, and finance.

Joan told us that "as a lawyer and CPA, the majority of my clients were start-ups and I developed an expertise in helping businesses cultivate and implement the legal, accounting, and general business structures that would facilitate their success."

"For the workshops, I had the two-fold goal of imparting knowledge on lawyering skills and law firm management best practices and obtaining germane information on the regional and local approaches and challenges of law practice in the Gulf."

A lawyer might know the law, and even possess an array of professional skills, but the key to succeeding in the practice of law is management. Most lawyers do not go to school to become managers, but rather to study law, and for many of them it comes as a surprise to learn that they must be managers as well.

"I now have had, in my opinion, the enviable position of serving as a Middle East North Africa (MENA) legal specialist on behalf of the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ROLI)."

LPM and ROLI are now planning an online legal training program based on Joan’s workshops. The program will cover the evolving economies of the Gulf countries.
