Reprieve, a UK-based organization dedicated to the defense of individuals facing the death penalty in the U.S. and abroad, recently released a video underscoring the importance of consular access for those facing capital murder charges in the U.S. Over fifty foreign nationals have been sentenced to death in the U.S. and almost none of them were told of their rights under the Vienna Convention to inform their home countries about their detention. In 2010, the ABA House of Delegates adopted a policy calling upon the federal and state governments to ensure that the fundamental protections of Article 36 to the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations are extended fully and without obstacle to foreign nationals within United States borders. ABA Moratorium Project Steering Committee Sandra Babcock is featured.
