Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Breast Cancer Task Force and the Breast Cancer Legal Advocacy Workshop Toolkit.
The American Bar Association’s Breast Cancer Task Force (“Task Force”) is a pro bono initiative that was developed to lead and implement educational programs to help protect the legal rights of breast cancer patients. A primary mission of the Task Force is to coordinate training sessions for attorneys interested in assisting breast cancer patients who need legal advice related to their diagnosis and treatment. Since 1993, the Task Force has conducted such Breast Cancer Legal Advocacy Workshops (“Workshops”) across the country, often in conjunction with state or local bar associations. The Workshops are designed to provide all attorneys, regardless of their area of legal expertise, with the resources and training needed to help counsel breast cancer patients on those areas of the law they are most likely to confront as a result of their illness.
In order to increase the number of legal advocates available to assist breast cancer patients, by increasing the number and location of Workshops, the Task Force has developed this Toolkit to provide sponsoring organizations with detailed guidance on how to organize and conduct a Workshop in their community. The Toolkit is a practical guide that covers the full range of issues you are likely to confront in developing a Workshop; it includes sections ranging from which substantive topics to cover, how to secure CLE credit, and how to advertise to increase attendance.
By developing this Toolkit, we have tried to make it as easy as possible for an organization interested in assisting breast cancer patients in their community to hold a Workshop for local attorneys. Moreover, Task Force members are available to provide further guidance as needed.
If you have any questions about this Toolkit, conducting a Breast Cancer Legal Advocacy Workshop, or you are interested in joining the Breast Cancer Task Force, please contact Simeon Carson, Associate Director of the ABA Health Law Section, at 312-988-5824 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
