Membership Diversity Enhancement Program

MDEPThe Membership Diversity Enhancement Program (MDEP) is designed for lawyers who have been under-represented in our Section membership. The program’s goal is to have its programs, publications, and other activities reflect the diverse perspectives and interests of all lawyers who practice in the environmental, energy, and natural resource law areas. 

As a MDEP participant, the Section will pay 50% of your ABA dues and waive your Section dues, so that you only need to pay the remaining 50% of your ABA dues!

As an added benefit, your registration fee for one Section-hosted conference within one year of participating in the program will be waived!

New for 2013-2014! Participants will also receive up to a $400 travel stipend when registering for your one free Section hosted conference! 

Selection Criteria and Eligibility

The program is open to minority lawyers, women lawyers, lawyers with disabilities, and differing sexual orientation and gender identification that are:

  • Young lawyers (lawyers admitted to practice for less than five years or who are under 36 years old),
  • Government lawyers,
  • Public interest,
  • Academia, or
  • Solo practitioners

Please note: Consistent with the goal of increased membership diversity, the program especially encourages applicants who are not already ABA or Section members and applicants whose dues are not reimbursed by their employer.

Individuals must agree, if selected, to:

  1. Pay the portion of ABA dues not covered by the program within 30 days of notification.
  2. Join at least one substantive committee.
  3. Provide their e-mail address to the Section.
  4. Participate in Section activities in some meaningful way, such as writing an article for a Section newsletter, Trends, or NR&E, agreeing to serve as a Vice Chair for a Committee, or participating in the planning of a program.
  5. Attend at least one Section program; registration for one program will be complimentary.

2014-2015 Application Deadline TBD

The Section has filled all 50 positions for the 2013-2014 program!  An announcement will be made when we start accepting applications for the 2014-2015 program.  If you are not already a Section member, be sure to join our LinkedIn discussion group to be one of the first to hear about it!
