December 6-7, 2011 National Civil Law Custody Institute - San Diego

National Civil Law Custody Institute
December 6-7, 2011
San Diego, CA

Presented by the American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence and the United States Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women.

The majority of parents in high-conflict child custody litigation report a history of domestic violence in the relationship. Each year an estimated 3.3 million children are exposed to violence perpetrated by other family members against their parent or caretaker. However, custody courts often fail to issue custody orders that protect children and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

This interactive 2-day Institute will provide custody law and litigation skills for practicing attorneys that will enable them to more effectively, ethically, and holistically represent victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Through a variety of learning activities including small group exercises, demonstrations, role-plays and facilitated discussions, participants will be better able to:

(1) Effectively represent victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and dating violence in custody/visitation cases;

(2) Develop an effective case theory incorporating the required elements to establish custody for clients;

(3) Effectively integrate the use of experts in custody cases; and

(4) Improve client interviewing skills.

ATTENTION: This training is interactive. Participants will be working with other participants and faculty to generate ideas and facilitate effective learning.

Legal Assistance to Victims (LAV) grantees are given participant priority. No more than 3 grantees from the same LAV funded program may register for the Institute without prior approval from the program’s grant manager. Registration is limited to 40 participants. If accepted, participants will receive a confirmation e-mail that will include information about accommodations and training logistics. Please allow at least 3 business days before contacting us about the status of your registration.
