Chair's Welcome

I wish all Section of Science & Technology Law members a Happy New Year. We look forward to providing even more valuable content, outstanding programs and networking opportunities in 2010.

The Section delivers its members free substantive content through its publications: SciTech e-Merging News, The SciTech Lawyer and Jurimetrics in addition to committee newsletters, such as Biotech Briefing and EDDE Case Digest. You will receive SciTech e-Merging News every quarter electronically. The SciTech Lawyer is the Section's practice specific hard copy magazine featuring cutting edge news. Its online archives are a useful resource. The Section takes great pride in its half-century sponsorship of the esteemed law review journal Jurimetrics. Jurimetrics debuted as Modern Uses of Logic in the Law in September 1959, drawing its current name from the article "Jurimetrics: The Next Step Forward?" by Lee Loevinger, a distinguished jurist and former SciTech Chair. The editorial team has worked tirelessly with the Section to develop an online Jurimetrics format that provides convenient, on-demand access to the full range of journal content. An enhanced search capability will soon increase our utilization by judges, professors, students, practicing attorneys, and scientists. SciTech's more than 13,000 members continue to receive Jurimetrics online as a special benefit, and bound versions are available for purchase at the end of each year.

As for Section programming, we are delighted to deliver the third annual free-to-Section member CLE teleconference on February, 23rd of 2010. Click here to register today for FREE CLE and ethics credit. The program is titled Dangerous Curves Ahead: When Legal Ethics and Technology Collide. This session will highlight topics, such as metadata missteps; damaging electronic messages; record keeping nightmares; social networking perils; ways to avoid costly collisions; and how to protect your clients from harm. Register today to join our panel of experts for a lively discussion of these issues and ways to avoid costly collisions. Other upcoming Section CLE programs, such as free clean technology roundtables, are highlighted on the Section's homepage ( www.abanet.org/scitech) below Upcoming Events and CLE.

The ABA Midyear Meeting and Annual Meeting meetings, programs and events are informative and thought provoking opportunities to network. The 2010 Midyear Meeting is in Orlando, Florida Thursday, February 4th - Saturday, February 6th. The Section is pleased that past Section Chair Ray Ocampo will receive the Spirit of Excellence Award at the ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession's Spirit of Excellence Luncheon during the Midyear Meeting. If you will be in Orlando at that time, please click here to view the Section's schedule to attend a meeting or event that interests you. The ABA Annual Meeting will be in San Francisco this year August 5-7. All Section members will soon receive an invitation in the mail and details will be on the Section's homepage.
