Judicial Intern Opportunities Program (JIOP)

The JIOP provides opportunities to students who belong to racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession, as well as students with disabilities, students who are economically disadvantaged and students who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered. This past year, the JIOP placed 170 law students in judicial internships. These positions are made possible through the generous judicial officers at state, federal and appellate levels. An alternative to traditional moot court competitions, each two-person team is asked to solve a cutting-edge and complex business problem that might arise in an everyday tax practice. View slideshows of students and judges in action from past competitions! Winners accept their awards after the final decisions are rendered. This year's J.D. problem focuses on the personal income tax effects of a famous athlete's divorce from his wife, as well as his subsequent attempts to revive his marriage and his professional sports career. Based on the Standing Committee’s recently issued Formal Opinion 10-457 on Lawyer Websites, this webcast examines websites as commonly-used tools for bringing lawyers and clients together and compares them to the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. The opinion works through what really happens when someone reads and responds to information posted on a lawyer's or a law firm's website.
