GENERAL PRACTICE, SOLO AND SMALL FIRM DIVISION NEWS
“Shaping Our Future” Membership Questionnaire
The ABA General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division is reaching out to its members through a survey designed to evaluate the direction of the Division in a number of key service areas, including publications, meetings, CLE programs, and Division activities.
The survey was created by a working group within the Membership Board. The purpose is two-fold:
- To determine the ways in which membership and member participation could be increased.
- To determine a picture of what members would like the Division to look like and how they would like the Division to function in the future.
Recommendations will be sent to the GPSolo leadership based on frequency of responses to certain survey questions as well as the common themes that emerge from responses to open-ended questions. A summary of the report will be submitted to the Council at the 2011 Spring Meeting.
A random group, statistically representative of our membership, will receive the questionnaire in January. If you receive a survey, thank you in advance for taking the time to complete it. If you have any questions, please contact Division Director Kimberly Anderson at Kimberly.Anderson@americanbar.org.
Law Student Mentoring Program
Where most mentoring programs are based on occasional meetings between seasoned practitioners and young lawyers, GPSolo’s Law Student Mentoring Program does more. The program, aimed to fill some of the gaps of traditional law school education, focuses on introducing law students to the practical aspects of being a lawyer through real-world activities and the mentor’s insight and guidance. Further, the program is flexible, enabling the law students to pick their own mentor and tailor the program’s criteria to their own interests.
The program allows students to establish a strong relationship with a mentor, witness several legal proceedings of their choosing, and gain valuable insight into the things law school doesn’t teach. Each student who successfully completes the program earns a certificate as a token of his or her accomplishment.
All GPSolo law students are eligible to participate in the program. Law students are free to choose any licensed attorney practicing in any legal area in any legal setting to serve as a mentor, regardless of the attorney’s membership status with the ABA or GPSolo. Students complete the program at their own pace, so long as all certificate materials are submitted to the Division. To learn more about the certificate requirements and to register for the program, please visit http://new.abanet.org/divisions/genpractice/GP309400/Pages/MentoringProgram.aspx.
