Application Period Opens for Solo and Small Firm Awards
The ABA is accepting nominations for its GP Solo and Small Firm Awards. The annual awards program recognizes dedication to the practice of law as general practitioners or solo or small firm lawyers. The deadline has been extended to June 30.Winners will be honored at the Annual Meeting during the Joint Reception with the Section of State and Local Government Law held at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis in San Francisco on Friday, August 6. The Standing Committee on Client Protection filed Report 103 with the House of Delegates for consideration at the 2010 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The recommendation seeks to substitute the Model Rules for Client Trust Account Records for the Model Rule on Financial Recordkeeping. An exhaustive, six-volume survey reveals how lawyers are using technology these days -- and the role their bar associations play. The survey, published by the ABA's Legal Technology Resource Center, spans six volumes and includes responses from nearly 5,000 lawyers.Among the survey's bar-related stats: 25% of respondents use their state bar's legal research provider, such as Fastcase or Casemaker, the most for free legal research.Another interesting stat: the ABA is offering a 20% discount on the survey for a limited time. ABA Releases Diversity Report, Will Feature Bar Implementation Stories on Website
A new ABA report lays out proposals to advance diversity in the profession. The report, which includes recommendations for bar associations, is the result of a two-year study by the ABA's Commission on Diversity. A PDF can be downloaded here. Hard copies can be requested from email@example.com.Suggestions for bars begin on page 35. The commission encourages bars to e-mail information on how they plan to implement – or are already implementing – them. Responses will be noted on the Next Steps website.A discussion on four of the report's emerging issues will be held during the ABA Annual meeting in San Francisco.

The State Bar of Georgia's Mentor Program and the Florida Coastal School of Law's Shadow Program have been named recipients of the 2010 Gambrell Professionalism Award. ABA Standing Committee on Bar Activities and Services member Frank Angones is among five winners of the ABA's annual Spirit of Excellence Awards.
