"ERR Gives Back"--Attorneys Attending the Employment Rights and Responsibilities Midwinter meeting in Miami Beach, Florida Donate Their Time and Money to Camillus House

Instead of playing golf, instead of taking in the sights of Miami Beach, and instead of basking in the warm Floridaphoto sunshine on Friday afternoon of the Employment Rights & Responsibilities Committee's recent midwinter meeting, a group of ABA attorneys, along with some spouses and children, donned aprons and hairnets to work in the kitchen at Camillus House, preparing and serving meals to Miami's homeless.

In furtherance of the Section's midwinter meeting Fundraiser Project, the Employment Rights & Responsibilities Committee has formed ERR Gives Back--a subcommittee designed to identify and assist a charitable organization each year in the community in which the midwinter meeting is held. This year, the organization selected was Camillus House.

Camillus House was founded over 50 years ago as an overnight shelter for Cuban refugees. It has grown into a full-service center, offering a full continuum of care designed to bring persons from a life on the streets all the way to permanent housing. Services include emergency, transitional and permanent housing, job training and placement, residential substance abuse treatment and aftercare, mental health treatment and maintenance, healthcare access and disease prevention, and hospitality services such as food, clothing, showers, mail and telephone services.

photoOn Friday, March 22, 2013, 16 attorneys and their family members joined in Camillus House's important mission by helping to prepare and serve dinner to the organization's clients. Our volunteers washed walls, floors, and windows in the dining area, set tables, made salads, cut bread, poured beverages, and served the evening meal.

In addition, they and several other midwinter meeting participants donated money to the organization. In total, the Employment Rights & Responsibilities Committee raised $2,000 to present to Camillus House in conjunction with our volunteer efforts.

More information regarding Camillus House can be found by visiting its website. ERR Gives Back is already in the process of identifying a charitable organization with which to partner at its 2014 midwinter meeting in Los Cabos, Mexico.
