Volunteer

The American Bar Association is committed to programs that provide lawyers with the resources needed to serve their communities, and opportunities to serve. Volunteers are needed for programs supporting veterans, families, children, the indigent, and many other populations.

ABA Free Legal Answers (ABA FLA)

Free Legal Answers is a virtual legal advice clinic. Qualifying users post their civil legal question to their state's website and volunteer attorneys log in to the website, select questions to answer and provide legal information and advice.

Immigrant Child Advocacy Network (ICAN)

ICAN is a hub for resources related to pro bono representation of children in removal proceedings and volunteer opportunities.

Veteran's Claims Assistance Network (VCAN)

The ABA Veterans Claims Assistance Network is providing unrepresented veterans who need help preparing initial benefits claim packages with the opportunity to work with lawyers who will help the veterans assemble their claim submissions as Fully Developed Claims (FDCs) for expedited rating decisions by the VA—at no cost to the veterans.

Military Pro Bono Project

The ABA Military Pro Bono Project accepts case referrals from military attorneys on behalf of junior-enlisted, active-duty military personnel facing civil legal issues, and it works to place these cases with pro bono attorneys. The Project is also the platform for Operation Stand-By, through which military attorneys may seek attorney-to-attorney guidance.

ABA Death Penalty Representation ProjectThe Project receives countless requests for assistance from prisoners on death row across the country who are without counsel. In response, we seek out private attorneys from the civil bar who can donate their time and skills to help ensure that every person facing a sentence of death has access to high-quality legal representation.

ABA Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence

The Commission provides training and resources to attorneys to increase access to justice for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

ABA Homeless Youth Legal Network (HYLN)

The ABA Homeless Youth Legal Network is a pro bono opportunity to help meet the legal needs of youth and young adults experiencing homelessness across the United States. The program matches lawyers and law firms with shelters, drop-in centers and other homeless youth providers to provide free legal services to youth and young adults.

ABA South Texas Pro Bono Asylum Representation Project (ProBAR)

ProBAR provides pro bono legal services to asylum seekers detained in South Texas by the United States government. The project recruits, trains and coordinates the activities of volunteer attorneys, law students, legal assistants, and interpreters.

ABA Immigration Justice Project (IJP) The Immigration Justice Project of San Diego promotes due process and access to justice for indigent immigrants and asylum-seekers through the provision of high-quality pro bono legal services for individuals appearing before the San Deigo immigration court. The Project also recruits, trains and mentors volunteer attorneys to represent men and women in immigration court proceedings who would otherwise lack representation.

I firmly believe the privilege of having been Bo’s lawyer as a volunteer through the Death Penalty Representation Project represents the high point of my legal career. I can only hope I will inspire other lawyers to volunteer because, in the words of Bryan Stevenson, ‘people are literally dying for effective representation.
