This award honors a Section member who is an accomplished practitioner in the field of antitrust or consumer protection. This award celebrates the recipient’s distinguished career as a practitioner highlighting their outstanding dedication and passion for service not only within the Section but also within the American Bar Association. Distinguished Public Service Award

This award aims to recognize a Section member who has distinguished themselves through their dedication to and passion for public service in the field of antitrust or consumer protection. For purposes of this award, “public service” is defined as government service -- state or federal; legislative, executive, or judicial branch; foreign competition or consumer protection authorities -- or teaching or research in an academic or other nonprofit setting; or service to a non-profit entity.

Additional Section Initiatives

International Scholar-in-Residence Program

This program provides funding for two international scholars per year to visit the United States to pursue their competition policy-related research. Applications are invited from junior faculty members (those who have been engaged in full-time teaching for five years or less) as well as current or recent Ph.D. students who have a demonstrated interest in the study of competition policy.

Janet D. Steiger Fellowship

This consumer protection outreach initiative introduces law students to the rewards of legal careers in public service. An eight to ten-week paid Fellowship, it provides law students an opportunity to work in the consumer protection and antitrust departments of state and territorial offices of Attorneys General throughout the United States.

Student Diversity Stipend Program

Antitrust has launched an inaugural diversity program to encourage law students to pursue government and not-for-profit careers in antitrust, data privacy and consumer protection law. The Section awards nine law students with stipends of $5,000 each to foster their career paths.

The Harvey Saferstein Consumer Protection Student Essay Contest

This project provides an opportunity to expand the role of the ABA in the area of Consumer Protection among law students, professors and practitioners. We invite students to participate in a discussion on hot topics in consumer protection through the submission of their essay on a pressing topic. The winning essay is also published on the ABA Antitrust Law Section website.

Hollis Salzman Memorial Scholarship

Hollis Salzman was one of the nation’s leading antitrust competition attorneys who dedicated her career to private enforcement of antitrust and consumer protection laws on behalf of plaintiffs. While immensely successful as a litigator, she was widely known for being a champion of gender equality and diversity in the antitrust bar. This Scholarship in her name is designed to encourage and assist law students identifying as women to pursue a summer or mid-year internship or clerkship in public/private enforcement of the antitrust or consumer protection laws.

Robert Pitofsky Law Student Writing Competition

The Robert Pitofsky Law Student Writing Competition was created to encourage and reward law student writings on antitrust subjects of general and current interest. The Section invites editors of law school publications and students to submit to the Antitrust Law Section articles on a current topic, dealing with antitrust and consumer protection law.
