UAE Workshop Focuses on Improving Professional Training

December 2009

From October 29–30, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), in cooperation with the Institute of Training and Judicial Studies (ITJS) in the United Arab Emirates, held a workshop on best practices in legal professional education. David Nuffer, U.S. magistrate judge from Utah, and James Buchanan, a senior education specialist at the U.S. Federal Judicial Center, led the sessions. A total of 25 judges and prosecutors, who are also ITJS trainers, participated in the workshop. ABA ROLI program directors in Bahrain and Turkey also attended the event.

The workshop covered instructional systems design, judicial education program strategies and developing trainer action plans. Participants also examined methods of incorporating new training techniques, strategies and technologies, and observed a demonstration of web-based legal training. Trainees said the discussions will help the ITJS deliver better quality training to the United Arab Emirates legal community.
