Emirati Government Lawyers Explore CLE Issues

May 2012

In cooperation with the Dubai Legislative Affairs Department (DLAD), the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) participated in a December 2011 training for government lawyers on the importance of continuing legal education (CLE). Tom Russell, former CLE director for the Washington State Bar Association, led the program, which examined topics such as mandatory CLE, international best practices, the role of firms in promoting continued education and ways in which Dubai lawyers can embrace the need for enhanced CLE.

DLAD is working to increase the availability of continuing legal education for Dubai-based lawyers.  It is also working to implement mandatory continuing legal education based on Gulf Cooperation Council Model Rules for Continuing Legal Education, developed last year with assistance from ABA ROLI. ABA ROLI’s work to build the practical and professional skills of Emirati judges, lawyers and prosecutors is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Middle East Partnership Initiative.
