ABA ROLI Trains Bahraini Prosecutors and Judges on International Fair Trial Standards

May 2012

In partnership with the Bahrain Office of the Attorney General, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative trained more than 40 prosecutors and judges on international fair trial standards. The workshop included a discussion by Bahrain Attorney General Ali Fadhul Al Buainain on the fair trial rights as they currently exist under the Bahraini Constitution and statutory laws. Nicholas Cowdery, former director of Public Prosecutions for New South Wales (Australia) and former president of the International Association of Prosecutors led discussions regarding international best practices on fair trials. Topics included standards for ensuring a fair trial during all phases of the investigatory, trial process and compliance with “pressure points” during prosecution, and the role of the prosecutor in protecting human rights. The training is planned to be incorporated in Bahrain’s prosecutor-trainee courses regularly held at the Judicial and Legal Studies Institute. The program was supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Middle East Partnership Initiative.
