The ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) opened its first Kazakhstan office in the city of Almaty in 1993 and is currently based in Astana. Since then, ABA ROLI has had offices in Shymkent and Oskemen. ABA ROLI has also had a separate media support center in Almaty.

Since launching its Kazakhstan programs, ABA ROLI has worked with lawyers, law students, judges and citizens across the country. ABA ROLI has provided continuing legal education for lawyers on a variety of topics, including human rights, business law, jury trials and media law. ABA ROLI has worked with judges on strengthening the legal profession through the creation of the Union of Judges of Kazakhstan and through publication of the Judicial Reform Index report, assessing the state of the country’s judiciary. ABA ROLI has also provided a range of technical trainings for judges, including by collaborating with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Asian Development Bank to conduct the first regional conference on combating money laundering in 2006.
