From 2010 to 2012, to help alleviate the restrictive climate for journalists and to promote the fundamental right of freedom of expression, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) helped to educate media professionals on their rights and responsibilities. ABA ROLI partnered with journalists and bloggers to encourage independent reporting. We also supported a Baku-based media law school as it trained on media law, rights and freedoms, on the legal framework governing new technologies and on effective legal reporting.
In 2013, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) worked with Azerbaijani universities to provide support and expertise in developing legal education programs and teaching methodologies, and in enhancing curriculum. As the nation continues its economic development in the natural gas industry, ABA ROLI has supported these efforts through an initiative to establish a new LL.M. program in maritime and energy law at Baku State University (BSU). We helped BSU’s law faculty increase its teaching and administrative capacity and supported strategic planning for institutional and curriculum improvement. ABA ROLI also supported the integration of interactive teaching methods in key substantive areas, including in environmental protection, energy law and human rights.
