On March 5, U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse held a reception and congratulated the Women’s Bar Association (WBA) for receiving $96,000 grant from the One Woman Initiative—a U.S. Department of State international women’s empowerment fund. About 50 women, including members of the WBA, members of parliament, judges and ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) staff, attended the reception, which was held at the ambassador’s residence to celebrate the international women’s day.
The WBA will use the new grant to educate rural Azerbaijani women about domestic violence, human trafficking, adolescent marriage and gender equality. The WBA expects more than 500 women participants in the five regions where it plans to hold awareness-raising community gatherings.
The WBA was established in 2006 with the support of the ABA ROLI and the U.S. Agency for International Development. ABA ROLI continues to play a significant role in providing technical assistance to support the organization’s ongoing development.
