Armenian Attorneys Participate in a Trial Advocacy and Legal Writing Training

February 2010

From January 29–31, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) conducted a trial advocacy and legal writing training for 53 Armenian attorneys in Tsakhkadzor. Participants included newly licensed advocates and public defenders from throughout Armenia.

The training featured three rounds of mock trial exercises. Covering labor and administrative law, the first round was led by Heriqnaz Tigranyan of Transparency International. Following discussions, participants were divided into teams to present their strategies for hypothetical cases.

The second round focused on the role and importance of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in the Armenian legal system, while the third round addressed the convention’s scope of impact, illustrated through examples of case law from the European Court of Human Rights. Arthur Grigoryan, a prominent Armenian advocate, led the sessions.

At the end of the training, ABA ROLI staff conducted a survey to gather participants’ feedback and to identify future training needs of advocates and public defenders.
