Rule of Law Initiative Participates in the Asian Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility

October 10, 2007

On 28 September 2007, the Rule of Law Initiative’s Asia Regional Anti-Corruption Advisor, Andy Boname, spoke at the Asian Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility (AFCSR) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The presentation, addressing “Why and How Business Should Reduce Corruption”, alerted attendees to two recent APEC initiatives which give business an opportunity to reduce corruption and, at the same time, promote streamlined regulatory requirements. The two initiatives are an Australia-sponsored anti-bribery Code of Conduct for Business (co-sponsored by Chile and Vietnam), and a symposium, sponsored by Vietnam, that will explore the links between corruption and burdensome administrative and regulatory requirements. The RACA’s presentation encouraged business to generate a public/private partnership in the context of these two programs, where business associations could both support the adoption of the Code and advocate for regulatory streamlining. The RACA also contributed, albeit in a small way, to the Vietnamese people. On the morning of 29 September, Boname made a donation at the Saigon Times’ annual blood drive, noting, “This is one gift that really is better to give than to receive.”
