A Magistrate Gains Skills to Combat Gender-Based Violence, Teaches Others

Family Support Center Strengthens the Fight Against Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking

Haiti is particularly plagued by gender-based violence (GBV), with up to 70 percent of Haitian women have been personally affected by the crime, according to World Bank estimates. Up until recently, Chief Justice Vernet Simon of the jurisdiction of Hinche had never participated in any formal training on the crime, despite the unusually high rate of GBV in his community. Workshop Addresses Human Rights and Legal Advocacy in the ASEAN Region

From November 22–24, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), the Malaysian Bar and the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (also known as LBH Jakarta) facilitated a workshop on human rights advocacy in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). About 20 Southeast Asian public interest lawyers attended the workshop, which discussed the ASEAN human rights system and how legal advocacy can strengthen it. Held days after the formal adoption of the controversial ASEAN Human Rights Declaration, the training addressed both the limitations and possibilities the declaration presents. Read more »»

Program Helps Boost Continuing Legal Education in the UAE

As part of our work in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is supporting the Dubai Legal Affairs Department (DLAD)—the regulatory body for private attorneys in Dubai—in its efforts to create a system of mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE) for the Emirate. DLAD is considering two major initiatives, the first being the development of a bar exam for Dubai attorneys, whether educated in Dubai or elsewhere, and the second being the development of a MCLE system for all practicing attorneys. Read more »»

Multi-Pronged Effort Supports Professional Development in Qatar

In the Gulf region, where continuing legal education is voluntary, Qatar’s legal profession is taking steps to expand professional development and continuing legal education (CLE) opportunities for its members. To support these efforts, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) offers executive CLE courses that are designed for experienced attorneys seeking training in substantive areas and that can accommodate busy professional schedules. Read more »»

The ABA Rule of Law Initiative and the Center for Environmental Law and Community Rights organized three workshops in Papua New Guinea in July and August, and a visit by a representative of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in September to highlight human rights in the context of extractive industries.
